Soroptimist International (SI) is an international association of professionally successful andsocially active women. The first club was founded in 1921 in Oakland, California. There arecurrently around 100.000 women organized in over 3000 clubs in 130 countries.

The name “soroptimist” originates from the Latin “sorores optimae” and means “sisters strivingfor the best”.

The members share the following goals:

• high ethical standards
• human rights and advancement of the status of women
• a spirit of friendship and mutual help
• international understanding, equality and peace

The members promote social contact, cooperation and tolerance. The club is a non-governmentalorganization with representatives in various UN organizations. It is neutral with regard to politicsand religion. The official languages are English and French. Women can become members byinvitation only.

There are three SI clubs in Slovenia:

• SIC Maribor – established on March 20, 1993
• SIC Ljubljana – established on Maj, 1993
• SIC Ptuj – established on September 29, 2001
• SIC CELJE – established on Juny 8, 2013

 

FOUNDING OF SC MARIBOR

The club was formed on March 20, 1993 in Maribor. Chartered by SIC Graz (Austria).

The charter on the occasion of the acceptance of SC Maribor into the international organizationwas presented by the then president of SI Europe, Ms. Nina Koumanako. The president of SI Europe Extension, Ms. Clara Blanc, and 95 invited guests from Slovenia and Europe were also present at the founding ceremony.
